Homework (Atomic Rooster album)Image via Wikipedia
When I came home from work yesterday my youngest son came up and gave me a hug. Then I kissed my wife and hugged my daughter. After changing and settling down a bit I looked over my son's homework and went over a few things with him. He is in third grade and in math they are reviewing multiplication and division facts. The sad thing is, I have not spent much if any time going over his multiplication facts with him, yet, he pretty much knows them all. He said he did make a times table chart at school once. So, I am happy he is doing well but, sort of embarrassed that I have done so little. Now, my wife does go over his homework before I get home. I guess he has a better memory than mine.

What is good is that I can enjoy some other things with him rather than just going over his homework. I am really thankful that I can come home and enjoy my family. Work has been pretty intense and the stress levels are high, and, I deal with middle school students and their parents on a daily basis, so, enjoying my children makes it all worth it. I hope you are able to enjoy the family and friends given to you.

Toy Story Life Loop

I took my family to see Toy Story 3 a few days ago. Disney and Pixar did a great job with it. Going to see the movie was a special kind of déjà vu for me. When the original Toy Story first came out I was dating my wife. Her two boys were about the same age as our two younger children are now. The older boys still remember going to see it on a school night, so it was a special treat. It was a good night, followed by many more.

Our two oldest boys are grown, one has finished college and working, the other is working and going to college. In a modern world sort of way like Andy, our family has grown with the Toy Story saga. My wife and I have enjoyed the Toy Story movies with our older and younger children and the older and younger kids have a connection through time in of all things, an animated picture.

Thanks to Disney and Pixar for doing a great job of tying it all together.

Life is good…how is yours?

Why I Shouldn’t Let My Children Watch the Food Network

At first I thought it was kind of cool that my kids like watching the food network, partly because it was what I wanted to watch. But, there is a downside.

My youngest son is by nature a finicky eater to say the least. He is like most kids his age. If it’s pizza, hamburgers, or chocolate, he’s in. When he eats he looks like he’s eating rotten sauerkraut or asparagus.  The funny thing is that he is vain enough to know he doesn’t want to be on Americas Funniest Videos for that.

Now that he has been watching the Iron Chef America when we ask him if he likes his food he sounds like a food critic. My wife made him some homemade macaroni and cheese and he said he didn’t like the texture! When we had chicken he complained that it was a bit too salty for him. The presentation lacked creativity (just kidding on that one). He did believe the left-over rib eye steak from the Black Angus was a little fatty. I thought it was great.

So, be careful what you let your children watch on TV.

Thus saith me.
